Can folic acid mitigate autism risk for children whose mother has epilepsy?

Image
Folic acid is a form of water soluble vitamin B9. Folic acid supplementation during pregnancy may mitigate possible risks associated with antiepileptic drugs (AED’s). According to a Norwegian study, mothers who take medications to control their seizures without folic acid supplementation during their pregnancy may be placing their unborn children at risk of later displaying autistic traits. The risk for autistic traits was significantly higher at 18 and 36 months of age, when folic acid supplementation was not used in comparison with the mothers who took AED’s and folic acid supplements. So, this study suggests that the degree of autistic traits was inversely associated with the plasma folate concentration of the mother during pregnancy. Considering that there are a high number of unplanned pregnancies in women with epilepsy, clinicians should consider advocating for low dose daily folic acid supplementation in women of child bearing age who take AED’s. Higher doses are

Early signs of autism

Early signs of autism can be easily detected in infants as young as 6-18 months, but parents have to pay attention for that. There are certain milestones for a particular age, like – no joyful expressions by 6 moths, no back and forth sharing of sounds by 9 months, no babbling by 12 moths and so on. If the child is not responding properly, than the parents need to check. Eye contact during early infancy is a key to early identification of autism. Children with autism however do not exhibit this sort of interest in eye looking. In fact, a lack of eye contact is one of the diagnostic feature of autism. Early markers of autism are – 1.        Poor eye contact 2.        Impairments in visual tracking to an object 3.        Atypical responsiveness 4.        Less social smiling, delayed expr
